Windows XP upgrade IBM Thinkpad T21

All OK until installation hangs at 35 mins remaining. Complete freeze of
laptop. Same occurance with upgrade win98SE to XP or on clean reformatted
hard disk.

Have updated BIOS from IBM website, updated all the drivers. However
compatibility check does advise additional files needed for crystal sound
fusion audio and PM (power management). No hardware incompatibility.
Windows xp supplement files also downloaded and updated. No errors shown on
device manager windows 98SE.

Pentium 3 mobile 800MHz
128mB RAM

Any suggestions out there?
Thanks.

More RAM and is the Windows XP CD an SP2 level CD?

Make sure you got the latest bios from IBM. I suggest clearing off the hard
drive to free up space. At least run defrag, maybe you don't have enough
contiguous space availble. I got three A20M, 500, 550 & 700 all P3 and
can tell you that 128mb is not sufficent for XP, that is a mistake. You are
better off doing a full install and getting ntfs at 2048 byte alignment
instead of doing a convert later and ending up with 512 byte ntfs (unless
gates has changed the convert program recently) I would look on ebay and
get some more memory.

Also, if later add memory and convert from fat32 to ntfs you will
immediately get two strikes against you for re-activation of XP. Better off
putting in hardware you need before you activate xp. Changing out the bios
will count against you. if you got an old bios you probably got an old
cdrom. Check for firmware upgrades before activating XP, not after or you
will be on the phone reading off digits a couple of times.
