i half way installed windows XP which i no longer want on
my computer but as a result ever time i restart my
computer it automatically starts going through the install
lation process of windows xp. i have to manually pick
windows 98 which is all i want what can i do?

I know the following article does not mention about xp, but it does talk of
the boot.ini and modifying it, difference is that you need to delete the
winnt lines and not add them. However, you should always back this up first,
before editing it, as it could cause problems if done in the wrong fashion.

To competely restore the 98 startup environment I would boot
from the 98 startup disk and issue the commands SYS C: and
FDISK /MBR.

It's relatively risk free, but there may be some of XP's files
sitting around somewhere.

It might be cleaner to finish the XP installation and then uninstall,
essentially reverting back to 98.
