Windows XP Unable to boot...

My problem is as follows;

I suddenly began recieving various fatal program errors.
I decided to reboot my PC, but it doesn't get past
the "Windows XP Home Edition" splash screen before it
automatically reboots on it's own.

I did some research and found the Microsoft Knowledge Base
Article 307545, "How to Recover from a Corrupted Registry
That Prevents Windows XP from Starting". I followed the
procedure of repacing the registry hives with those in my
C:\WINDOWS\REPAIR\ directory.

Now when I boot the machine, the disk checker CHKDSK runs
automatically. It gets to the point where it is verifying
indexes (step 2/3), gets to around 20% complete, finds an
abnormal error and restarts itself.

Any ideas on what is wrong and how to fix it? Right now,
I'm at the point where I'd be happy to get anything
running so I can burn my files to CD and reload Windows.

Thanks for the help,
Patrick

Yes, with the same problem.
I can't boot up in Safe Mode either

Have you tried pressing & holding down F8 as you boot
up ? - Then you can choose to 'go to last known good
configuration' & see if that works.

It sounds like your hard drive is dying. Do a diagnosis with a utility
downloaded from the hard drive mftr.'s website. You might be able to
get the files off the drive by either using a different operating
system, like Knoppix (which runs off a cd) or by slaving the drive in
another machine. If you are unsure how to do any of these things, take
the computer to a good local repair shop (not a BestBuy or CompUSa type
of store) and ask them to rescue your data first.

My PC is from eMachines - they don't give me the install
CDs, but they do give me recovery CDs. When I insert the
recovery CD, it tells me that it'll format my hard drive -
something I'd like to avoid until I can back up my data.
