Windows XP to Windows 98

I have a new computer running Windows XP. This is
connected to a wireless router. I have another computer
running windows 98SE using a wireless USB adapter. I can
connect to the internet with both machines and I can ping
both machines but cannot see either computer from the
other when looking and computer available to the
workgroup. Workgroup identification is the same for both
computers. what am I missing here, or is there a
compatability problem? What I want to be able to do is
move file from one machine to the other.

There could be quite a few issues there, one easy way to
check that you can actually access the other computer is
to type in
\\theothercomputersname\
in explorer
or to be totally sure use the ip instead of name

1. Permanently disable XP's built-in Internet Connection Firewall on
local area network connections -- it's for use only on a direct modem
connection to the Internet. Disable and un-install all other
firewalls while troubleshooting. Details here:

Windows XP Internet Connection Firewall

2. Use only one protocol for File and Printer Sharing. If the network
needs more than one protocol, unbind File and Printer Sharing from all
but one of them. Details here:

Windows XP Network Protocols
http://www.practicallynetworked.com/sharing/xp/network_protocols.htm

3. Make sure that NetBIOS over TCP/IP is enabled on all computers.
Details here:

Enable NetBIOS Over TCP/IP (NetBT)

Hello

You have no browser running.

I have had the same problems.
It is because you do not have a browser as well as other
services working.

Right click on My Computer and choose Manage.
In the new window choose Services.
In services choose Computer Browser.
It is most probably not running. Look at dependencies.
It will tell you what Browser depends on.
Start those services and make them AUTOMATIC.
Net Logon most probably will not start, unless you are on
a domain.

You should now be able to see all computers.
If not look at all dependencies and start the relevant
ones.

You might still have as I have had, a problem copying and
moving files, depending on the direction you are going in.
I keep getting ACCESS DENIED messages.

This is because you need to give full access to the shares.

also, depending on the security of the XP machine, the user name and password on the 98 one needs to be the same as the XP one. (if XP has a password defined)
