Can anyone tell me how I can add new short cut buttons
(to open programs such as Word or Windows Explorer)to the
Windows XP Task Bar to enable launch of such programs
with a single click of the mouse?

First make sure your quicklaunch is tured on. Right click on the
Taskbar>>Toolbars>>Quick Lauch.

to add shortcut's to it, first unlock the taskbar, right Click on
it>>Uncheck Locktask Bar. Now you can drag and drop shortcuts to it.

You're presumably talking about the Quick Launch Bar, not the
Task Bar. (Although the Quick Launch Bar normally resides on the
Task Bar, it doesn't have to, and can be dragged off it and to
another side of the screen.)

To add a shortcut to the Quick Launch Bar, simply drag it there.
