As "general users" bring machines to me for virus/ adware cleanup, I am
observing that nearly 100% of them do not understand hard drive space
management and the difference between the desktop and putting your stuff
into appropriate folders.

Every time Windows Shuts down, it saves all the information about your
desktop icons and their location. This is a lot of processing time.

When Windows starts up, and builds your personal desktop, all that
stored information is processed.

The more stuff you have on your desktop, the longer it takes.

There are two ideas to combat this.

1. Exploit well, "My Documents".
A. Put all your personal stuff into "My Documents" into new,
appropriately named folders (and sub folders).

B. Put "My Documents" on a different hard drive or partition. (Most
casual users can't do this step)

2. Make your own folder on Drive C: to hold your personal desktop icons
and shortcuts. Open that folder, make it a windows and leave it open.

Right Mouse Button (RMB) on each appropriate file and icon and DRAG it
to the open folder and drop it. You will be asked if you want to Move
or Copy. Choose MOVE.

After getting all the appropriate desktop objects into the folder, you
can close the folder.

Use RMB on My Computer and choose "explore". RMB drag and drop the new
folder to your desktop and choose "Create Shortcut"

Now what was 20 or 40 objects is simply one shortcut. You should be
left with less than a dozen high usage objects on the desktop. The
pleasant impact on quicker startup and shutdown will be very useful.
