Windows XP Startup Stops After Splash Screen

When I boot up my computer, it goes through the regular startup routine. The
Windows screen comes up and then it goes black. Normally, the cursor pops up
in a few seconds and then the logon screen. Instead, my computer goes to the
black screen, the cursor never shows up, and it stays at that black screen.

I can get into safe mode but that is it although one night I just left it
in the "hang" status and went to bed. The next morning, it had finally
started. Help!!??!!

What's the computer's configuration - stand alone or networked -
peripherals attached, OS Home or Pro, what SP level, updated? What
changed prior to this starting?

Thanks for the suggestions. I went back day by day with the System Restore
and a couple days back restore appears to have solved the problem. I
appreciate the help. Thanks.
