Windows XP service pack 3

Have just installed sp3 via Ms download now find that the system tools defrag
does not work! get a message Disc defragmenter could not start. Any ideas?

Nothing to do with Service Pack 3. There could be so many reasons
Windows Disk Defragmenter doesn't run, and you've provided virtually no
details that could identify a cause. This often happens when you
uninstall a third party defragmenter and the uninstall does not restore
the built in defragmenter.

Sorry am new to this sort of help, what details do you need?
It worked perfectly last week, no programs added in that time, though
Bullguard and ZoneAlarm security suites have updated themselves; the only
thing that's changed is service pack 3!

Dont think I've ever had a 3rd party defragmenter. have only ever used
windows system tools.
Have not previously used event viewer tons of info in it which to me seems
meaningless eg
x error 30/09/2008 20:33:23 ftdisk None 49 N/A
i Information 30/09/2008 20.33.26 eventlog None 6005 N/A

Answering "Unknown" Yes did a cleanup first and have 500gb of hard disk
though its configered with a "raid assembly?" so only shows 214gb of hard
disk space with 14.7gb used
