Windows XP Service Pack 2

Frank

I've heard some differing opinions on the newest service
pack released for Windows XP. I'd like some professional
opinions before I decide to go through with the update.
Any horror stories?

Thanks Greatly!

Slipstreamed SP2 into XP pro. Did a compete reinstall of XP SP2 and all programs. No problems, no horror story. Works just fine.

YMMV

Both links to telus give me invalid syntax errors
-- but works if I copy & paste

- many other links do work though

This is new since SP2... What's up?

Here's a good horror story. SP2 messed up my windows xp.
After installing SP2, windows xp wouldn't boot. I got a
winsrv error. I couldn't even boot safe mode. I had to do
a lengthy repair installation and I can't install any
service packs.

Hi frank, yeah I got story LOL. I was on here looking for
an answer to it, after you install the sp2 you will no
longer be useing live help or loading up pictures on ebay,
apparently there is some kind of problem with that, also
you will notice ( If you have more than one computer
networked in your house, that you will no longer be
dragging and dropping files from one to the other computer,
Yes thats right for some reason it wont allow it and you
will need to reboot the computer that you were dragging
TOO!.
These problems seem small while im typeing them out
But I personnally am going nuts from them, I have lost two
nights sleep tring to figure them out. NO LUCK YET some
one help if you can LOl I need it bad.

Well, I for one, won't be installing SP2 on my machines this side of
Christmas. My security depends on third party devices and nothing is
broken here!

Fred Langa puts it succinctly in his latest newsletter
(http://langa.com/current.htm ):

1) Go Slow With XP's SP2

Many readers are wondering what to do about XP's SP2, which is starting
to trickle out in a limited release. But over the next few weeks, just
about all XP users will be offered the download in a carefully sequenced
rollout designed to prevent the overload of Microsoft's servers.

When you're offered SP2, my advice is: Do nothing; wait a bit.

SP2 is huge--- so big it's almost a whole new version of XP. Like any
new version of any OS, it *will* contain bugs, and it *will* cause
trouble on some setups. The more complex and/or nonstandard your setup
is, the greater the likelihood of a problem.

Plus, there's no "must have right now" element to SP2: Much of SP2 is
designed to force uninformed (or just plain lazy!) PC users to use basic
security--- to stay current with updates, to use a firewall, etc. (These
are the users running the unpatched/unprotected systems that allow most
worms/viruses to spread.)

I had some problems with programs or games just quit
working and the biggest problem was my CD burner software
resfused to write to a blank CDR. I eventually figured
everything out with some tweaking and adjusting but it
took awhile. SP2 is not with out problems one way or
another. Another thing to watch for as well. I set a
restore point before installing SP2 (just in case there
were problems) System would not revert back to the
previous restore point after the install. Install at your
own risk!

Dragging and dropping files for transfer works good here, no problems. Will
checkout the ebay thing next.

I followed the steps from the Service Pack Installation Checklist:
http://www3.telus.net/dandemar/spackins.htm

but did not unhook printer, scanner, router.

defragging, was the longest session especially defragging after the
installation. I think this final defrag was not smooth because I had not
completed the configuration questions of the firewall, antivirus and update
pop up properly. After some investigation I found to tick off 'have my own
software and will manage my own' satisfied the situation. Still the security
icon would not leave the sys tray until I had made some kind of entry to the
automatic update. It would not accept just NO. My solution was 'alert me and
I'll deal with that'.
Sp2 does not recognize what my Norton 2002 antivirus is although it knows
its there and it did not recognize v 4.5 of Zone Alarm. Both are working
properly post sp2 and I'm not keen to update for both were working fine
previously.
Everything is working as normal. There is a new 'popup' warning with a sound
using IE on some web sites. Even though I set that to not make a sound it
still does.

The idea behind this security set-up is fine but it seems that it wouldn't
have been a major leap to recognize an existing firewall and anti virus
regardless of its version. There is a bit of an assumption that the 'general
user' out there has nothing in place so its kind of using the 'lowest common
denominator' for a major update.

Rose;
The recognition of the firewall and antivirus will not happen until
the manufacturers make the appropriate updates available to their
users.
Norton already has the update for 2004 out and eventually will for
2002 and 2003.
You will need to check with ZA for that particular version of Zone
Alarm you have installed.

Re: Jupitor Jones wrote-The recognition of the firewall and antivirus will

In the following article there is a list of software that could/may or will
have difficulties with Sp2
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=884130
Many of these issues are related to the introduction of the Windows Firewall
feature.
............

I'm interpreting the above to mean IF the Sp2 FIREWALL feature is NOT
enabled THEN the software will not have a problem.
Several of my main software is on this list. I do not have the Sp2 firewall
active and Diskkeeper, MsOffice, Antivirus and Firewall are all operating as
normal.

Its my opinion that following the steps on
http://www3.telus.net/dandemar/spackins.htm is the key to success and I
figured the most important step was unchecking all the items in the start-up
and rebooting.
I did a lot of looking around for input before installing this upgrade and
concluded if the hard drive had any poor links or orphans it likely would
just be accelerated so a tidy, clean registry and a careful installation
gives a similar result. I thought there would be a perceptible difference
with Sp2 installed and there isn't.

Those links work just fine from here. Running SP2 on XP Pro.

It was QuoteFix
- it does not do anything good that it used to do before SP2
- it actually has less functionality than OE now - but STRANGELY only in
SOME newsservers
- it also seems to be messing around with virtual top/bottom posting now

There is no patch yet, but I hear there are some settings to get it to work
again
