As I was shutting Windows down the power cord got pulled out. Now when I
restart windows it will get to the Windowws XP screen but not get back to the
desk top. The "blue bar" just scrolls back and forth but Windows never fully
restarts. I can start in safe mode but never get back to my Windows desktop.
I tried System restore but when the computer re-boots itself the same thing
happens; it will get to Windows XP screen but never back to desk top....

Do you have an actual Windows XP Installation CD (not the System
Recovery disk provided by many major computer manufacturers)? If so
then boot the computer with this and select the Repair (Recovery
Console) option. When the system has finished booting up and stops
at the command prompt enter the following command:

CHKDSK C: /R

This may take a while to run but it will fix any hard drive data
corruption problems that may have been caused by your inadvertent
power off.

Good luck

Make sure there is a full and complete backup before running chckdsk. If
you need help on how to backup the drive as it is now, post back.

I do not have/can not find the actual Windows XP installation disc, but do
have the OS disc provided by Dell. Any other suggestions would be
appreciated. I am hoping it can be resolved without having to reformat, as
my son has some gaming programs on the computer that we can no longer reload
if a reformat is in order...

Thanks!

Create a BartPE disk and run chkdsk from there.

As an aside, your statement that there are programs on the drive you can't
replace suggests you don't have a procedure in place to backup the system so
it can be restored. It's a bit late to be thinking about this know, but
still it's worth it.

Look at getting a drive imaging program, I recommend Acronis True Image
Home, version 10, and an external hard drive. Use Acronis to regularly
image the system to the external drive. Then in cases like this the system
can be restored in less than an hour. Images can be done on a partition or
drive basis, restores on a file, partition or drive basis. It also does
drive cloning and file backup.

If you have another computer running Windows XP (e.g. the one you are
now using) then create a bootable Windows XP CD on it using Bart's PE
Builder ( http://www.nu2.nu/pebuilder/ ). Boot the problem computer
with that CD, open a Command Prompt window, and enter the command:

CHKDSK C: /R

Good luck
