Windows XP repeatedly hanging...

I've looked at the virus angle and the machine checks out
clean. No other strange software installed that I can
tell.

It's a P4 with 256M and SP1 installed. I installed the
blaster worm fix and most of the other Microsoft patches
and fixes. When it hangs, there are no messages, the mouse
and keyboard stop responding and the machine just sists
here, but it does cache the keystrokes and the mouse
movements so that when it wakes up, the keystrokes are
not lost...

This is most disturbing...

I'll do a clean install again, but wonder what the heck
would be causeing this to happen...

Thanks to all...

All fans working. I'll try the memtest program.

This seizing is strange. There is no rhythm to the
episodes. Sometimes it happens three or four times in a
row and then it might wait 30 seconds or so and do one...

Strange isn't the word... Bizarre...

Check the Ram. Try Memtest. http://hcidesign.com/memtest/download.html
Did you check all your cooling fans, clean the inside
with a air duster?

Memtest came out fine with no errors after 9,000+
passes...

I hate the problems that drive you nuts and never come
back and you don't know why it happened...

There is another person here that has a similar
problem... Posted just after mine...

Is it going around?

I don't know about "going around". Thing just aren't perfect and
hardware breaks. Try with a different NIC then. I had one system where
the mouse was causing problems. The bloody mouse. No, Alexa wouldn't
have caused these problems. I really don't think it's a software issue.
Good luck.
