Windows XP Registry Problem

Which Windows XP registry keys do I first need to remove
or modify so that I can install a later version of MS
Office?

KnowledgeBase article 295823 only provides a Windows
Installer Cleanup Utility for earlier versions of Windows.
It implies that I need to remove the "Windows Installer
Registry settings" left over from the "earlier Office
installation" before I can install the later version of
Office.

Any help in modifying the Registry would be appreciated.
I know how to use RegEdit, but I don't know which Registry
keys to remove or modify.

TIA
Geoff

Use the installer cleanup utility listed under Windows 2000.

Or,
The correct version of Windows Installer Cleanup utility (msicuu.exe) is
available from Windows XP CD-ROM.

1. Insert your Windows XP CD into the drive and browse to H:\SUPPORT\TOOLS.
2. Double-click on setup.exe.
3. Then when prompted, opt for the Complete Installation and you'll have
Windows Installer Cleanup utility installed.
4. Click on Start > All Programs > Windows Support Tools > Command Prompt,
type msicuu.exe and press Enter.

[This launches the Windows Installer CleanUp dialog window. It displays all
the programs and applications that have been installed onto your PC using
the Windows Installer.]

5. Select the item that's causing problems and click on Remove. All the
program's associated registry entries will be removed from your system along
with its entries under Add/Remove Programs.

On the XP CD is a folder of Support\Tools R-click the Suptools.msi and
take Install to install them

Then go to Start - Run and run
msicuu

That will allow you to select the Microsoft Office line and click Remove
to clear the installation out.

Hi Alex,

Many thanks for your reply.
I'll contact my troubled user now.
(I'm in London, he's in Norfolk).
And I'll report back on how we get on.

Once again, thanks for your time and
trouble.

Best Regards.

Hello Alex (Or any other gurus out there)

Installation of the support tools has put the file
MSICU (not MSICUU, with two U's) on the hard
disc.

1. Does this file do the same job, please?
Namely, remove the current MS Office 2000
registry keys, so that Office 2K can be re-installed.
(We are trying to install the same version,
not as my earlier post said a later version.)

2. Am I right in thinking that this utility *is* OK to
run on a Windows XP machine, because the
utility came from the XP installation CD?
(I'm worried about that warning on the Microsoft
site not to use MSICU or MSICUU on an XP
machine.)

TIA
Best regards
Geoff

Geoff,

MSICU.exe is the actual installer. It extracts the msicuu.exe for usage
later. Yes. it works well in Windows XP also.

Once you install MSICU.exe, it extracts msicuu.exe creates a shortcut in the
Start Menu > Programs. The shortcut is actually msicuu.exe

You may also install the Windows XP Support Tools (msicuu, msizap) etc from
XP Cd-ROM

The one installed from the XP disk should be msicuu.exe and should be in
Program Files\Support Tools.

I don';t have a msicu one around at all, and must suspect that this came
from a Win2000 or NT disk. The msicuu from the XP CD is OK with XP, but
check in that folder for it

Yes, Alex. the downloadable one from MIcrosoft is MSICU.exe (It extracts
msicuu.exe - actual application)
