Windows XP Professional PC in Windows NT Domain on LAN.

Dont laugh, but (and this will be the case for another month at
least):-

Our network has an NT 4.0 SP6a server and 25 Windows XP workstations.

There is one PC on the network which I am unable to connect to any
shared resources with
e.g. if I try to connect to a shared network drives on that PC,
\\gn-xp-new\temp I get the message saying "The network path was not
found" and \\gn-xp-new gives the same error.

Windows firewall is turned off (I tried just turning it off, and when
that did not work I disabled the service completely). I have also
tried removing the PC from the domain and joining the domain again to
no avail, (and removing it and renaming and rejoining it)...

This PC is set up the same as all the other PCs on the network to the
best of my knowledge (I have not disabled any services or anything like
that).

Also, in server manager, 'gn-xp-new' is there but it is ghosted out and
if I try to access it I get the error message "Windows cannot find the
network path....."

NB on the problem PC if I go to Start - Run - \\gn-xp-new\temp it
brings up the shared drive with no problems..

Is there somehting simple I am missing?

Any ideas?

Thanks in advance.

Jordan,

First, in the hopes that your problem is simple, review this article about
Windows XP and name resolution on domains:
<http://nitecruzr.blogspot.com/2005/05/windows-xp-on-nt-domain.html>
http://nitecruzr.blogspot.com/2005/05/windows-xp-on-nt-domain.html

Next, my article on Windows Networking:
<http://nitecruzr.blogspot.com/2005/05/troubleshooting-network-neighborhood.html>
http://nitecruzr.blogspot.com/2005/05/troubleshooting-network-neighborhood.html

If no help yet, provide "browstat status" and "ipconfig /all" from the problem
computer, and from 2 properly working computers, so we can diagnose the problem.
Read this article, and linked articles, and follow instructions precisely:
<http://nitecruzr.blogspot.com/2005/05/troubleshooting-network-neighborhood.html#AskingForHelp>
http://nitecruzr.blogspot.com/2005/05/troubleshooting-network-neighborhood.html#AskingForHelp

And the solution may be in the details, so it's to your advantage to not hide
anything.

Firstly, thanks very much for the prompt and comprehensive reply.

NB - I am using my ISP DNS servers on all PCs on the network at present
as my NT servers use WINS and NETBIOS, NOT DNS in any shape or form to
provide all Windows networking services...

As far as I can tell from the dumps below, the problem PC "Could not
open key in registry, error = 5 Unable to determine build of br
owser master: 5", whereas the working PC does not have this problem..

Should my first step be to reinstall TCP/IP on the problem PC, and if
so, do I just need to remove windows networking and enable it again?

Thanks.

Also, Just to make it clear, I have no problem accessing any network
resources FROM the problem PC, my only problem it accessing resources
ON the problem PC from other PCs in the network.

Thanks.

Jordan,

Let's see what we know now.
# Both computers on same subnet 192.168.2/24.
# Both computers using same DHCP server 192.168.2.190.
# Both computers setup same with DNS and WINS (do you have a second subnet
192.168.3/24?)
# Both computers acknowledge the same master browser CF01.
# Both computers in same domain CF.
# Both computers see 36 computers (is that the right number?).
# Neither computer shows any gratuitous protocols or transports.

The error "Could not open key in registry, error = 5 Unable to determine
build of browser master: 5" simply says that YOU (or GN-XP-NEW) does not have
administrative access to CF01. Apparently YOu (and jmc-xp) does have access to
CF01. Were you using the same account from both computers?

One of the most common causes of this problem, in home networks, would be a
misconfigured or overlooked personal firewall, but there are other possibilities
too. What antivirus product do you use?

http://nitecruzr.blogspot.com/2005/10/irregularities-in-workgroup-visibility.html

You have a WINS server setup, so name broadcast should not be so important (and
firewalls blocking name resolution datagrams should not have so much effect).
Are you sure that your WINS servers are working? The Hybrid node type queries
WINS, then tries name broadcast.

You can reset TCP/IP, you cannot reload or re install it, in Windows XP. If you
want to go that route, try LSP / Winsock corruption resolution first.

Thanks.

Yes I have a second subnet (accessed over a WAN).

Yes, I was logged in with admin privs on jmc-xp, and not with admin
privs on gn-xp-new.

I do not have any firewall. I tried it with no AV as well. Currently
have AVG antivirus installed (as for all the working PCs).

I *think* my WINS server is working OK - as the PC is able to access
all other services on my network.. NB - If I go to my Wins server
(CF01), and "ping gn-xp-new" this works fine, but it cannot see it in
the 'network neighborhood'.

I will try your guide to restting TCP etc on the problem PC and let you
know shortly how I get on.

Thanks again.

Hello again.

I tried Step one from
http://nitecruzr.blogspot.com/2005/05/problems-with-lsp-winsock-layer-in.html
(LSP-Fix) but it wrecked my TCP completely so I did a system restore
to a few days previous, and decided not to do any more fixes that did
not specifically say Windows XP.

I then did Step 4 (winsock XP fix), and rebooted. No difference.

I then did Step 5 (netsh winsock reset catalog), and rebooted. Still
no difference.

Thanks.

OK, Jordan,

LSP / Winsock corruption, when it happens, is absolute. You have to fix it, and
sometimes it takes all 6 fixes before you find one that works.

Assuming that the problem is NOT LSP / Winsock corruption, you'll next need to
check all of the other items in my troubleshooting guide.

Problems with personal firewalls, and antivirus components working like personal
firewalls, are very common this month. With every security product competing
with every other security product, added functionality makes anything suspect.
Read my article, look at every security product like antivirus and personal
firewall, and read the manuals.
