Windows XP professional crashes during logon and on connecting to

I have doubt as to whether this problem is caused due to any malware or
because of a system error. Th OS crashes even when scan-disk or any
anti-virus program is run. Windows loads very slowly and freezes at intervals
during the process. When the logon screen finally appears after several
minutes, it crashes and displays the following message in white font agains a
blue background:
A problem has been detected on your computer, and Windows has been shut down
to prevent damage to it.
IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL
If this is the first time you're seeing this STOP error screen, do the
following steps.
Restart your computer. If this screen appears once again, check if any new
hardware or software is installed. If this is a new installation, contact
your hardware manager for any new Windows updates that you might need.
Disable some BIOS options like caching or shadowing.

After displaying the above it then says:"Beginning dump of physical memory"
and reboots the system. The message lasts only for a few moments, and does not
allow me to "resrart properly" as it says to. I thought that this might be
caused due to bad-sectors on the disk. So i formatted the drive and installed
XP onto another drive(which has no bad sector). The problem has returned
barely a day after re-installation.Please help. Any replies can be addressed
