I recently built a pc and loaded windows xp home on to
it. About a week later I had to replace a faulty mother
board, after putting the new mother board in, it said that
activation and registration had to be done again because I
had changed the hardware so much. I followed the steps,
but when I entered in the product key I was told that the
key had been used to many times. I am the sole owner of
the xp disk and have not given it to anyone else so why is
it asking for a new product key?

Choose the option to activate by phone, automatic activation over the
Internet will fail since you changed your hardware so dramatically in such a
short period of time.

phone microsoft and give the details of hardware changes. they are very co-operative provided you can convince them your honesty.
