Had my laptop hard drive repaired and Windows XP
subsequently reloaded onto system. Problem is my
repairman did not use the Windows XP Product ID Key
posted on the underside of my KDS laptop. Therefore when
I try to update with Service Pack, the windows update
gives me "invalid product key, contact our piracy dept.".

As stated Windows XP came with my Windows set-up. Can I
reinstall Windows XP using the legal product key I have
on the underside w/o losing all memory on laptop.

Thanks,

Spencer

Greetings --

Are you trying to install Service Pack 1a and getting the
following:

The Product Key Used to Install Windows Is Invalid

You need to use your _legitimate_ full OEM copy of WinXP Pro to
perform a repair (a.k.a. in-place upgrade) installation, using the OEM
CD and Product Key.

Remember, you should also report the repairman who used the
pirated software to the pertinent consumer protection group(s) in your
area and Microsoft: http://www.microsoft.com/piracy/reporting/

Spencer;
Yes, perform a Repair Installation:
http://www3.telus.net/dandemar/repaxp.htm

This may not be possible with your OEM Windows XP.
If that is the case, you may need to use your CD and start all over
from beginning.

I would suggest you appropriately thank the tech for making this extra
work.
He needs to learn about OEM and possibly about using stolen software.
Find a better tech next time.
