Hi, I have a problem with activating my Windows XP product key that came with
my Toshiba Satelite Pro A60,

The problem is that when my had a BSOD, when booting up I found a CD from
Dell that I used to repair my installation of Windows XP, (Toshiba dont have
the function to repair Windows XP in their CD roms) and I reinstalled XP with
all my settings and Files.

Is there anyway to get my computer to work with the product key I got from
Toshiba? Or do I have to use the one that Dell gave me?

Thanks in Advance!

suddste223!

Thanks!

Doing two "wrongs" do not make a "right". If the Toshiba
product key cannot be exchanged into the Dell version (which
is about as close to being "generic" as a Microsoft original
OEM), then the installlation is screwed insofar as activation
and updates are concerned. Either obtain a genuine Windows XP
cdrom from Toshiba or go through its recovery to factory specs.

sorry, i know its wrong but i dont really have an option. Could I e-mail
toshiba to get a Windows XP CD?

Thanks for your reply!
Thanks!

It's not a given here that what he did was wrong .... even legally.

He has a COA and product key ... both legit ... from Toshiba. I believe
he's legal to use these with any CD media that is compatible. It's an
OEM product key, so it's not going to be compatible with a retail copy,
but it may well be compatible with either a generic OEM copy or a Dell
OEM copy. What he's really using is the "I386" folder, and the "I386"
folders from Dell, Toshiba and a generic OEM CD may very well all be
absolutely identical [if, that is, neither Dell nor Toshiba does "BIOS
locking", which they may or may not do]

Yes. Thats a good idea! Thanks for the reply!

I emailed them to ask for a Windows XP CD that only has the XP CD on it (not
that Reset to factory default settings one).

Do you think that they will send me a CD that will work like that?

Thanks for the reply!
Thanks!

They probably won't because they probably don't have one as a part
number to send out.

But you may be able to make one. Look for a folder on your laptop
called "I386" (it may be in the root or somewhere under \Windows). See
if it has Winnt.exe and Winnt32.exe in it. If it does, then for many
purposes, if you know how to use it, that folder is the equivalent of a
"Windows only" setup CD. Winnt.exe is the DOS setup program.
Winnt32.exe is the Windows setup program. Burn that folder to a CD. If
you search the web, you can find detailed instructions for making a
fully bootable Windows setup CD, but it's a lot of work and not really
necessary.

Yes. Thats a good idea! Thanks for the reply!

I got it working, but there is no option to repair, Wont it just overwrite
the windows folder and keep all my documents and settings?

Hello? I really need to know.

Would that file that you just mentioned overwrite just the Windows Folder,
or the whole lot (Documents, Programs, Settings)?
