Windows xp problem

I bought my computer about 2 years ago. It's a 1.1
celeron dell dimension 2100. It was very fast when we
first got it and remained so until about a year ago. It
has trouble multitasking programs that it could before.
Our microsoft word freezes occasionally and it takes time
for even my computer information screen to appear. We
recently had a cable moden installed and the comcast man
said that my computer was very slow, even for a 1.1. He
recomended reinstalling xp and manually reinstalling
other programs. Does this sound like a reasonable
solution? How difficult will this be to do? I am semi-
computer savvy. How would I reinstall xp? Would I have to
reinstall everything all over again?Thanks in advance.

Of course, reinstalling clean is always a good method of clearing out
the cruft, but it *does* mean starting over. Perhaps you would rather
just go do some generic troubleshooting and see if that makes a
difference: 1) scan with current av program ("current" meaning a
version not older than 2002 using updated definitions; 2) remove
spyware with Spybot Search & Destroy (www.security.kolla.de) and
Ad-aware (www.lavasoftusa.com); 3) stop unnecessary programs and
processes from starting with Windows; 4) empty Temporary and Temporary
Internet Files.

Also, I'm sure it couldn't hurt to run a Defrag. Open up My Computer,
right-click the hard drive and click Properties. Click the Tools tab, and
then click the "Defragment Now" button. Note that defragmenting a drive
could take some time, depending on the level of fragmentation.

One posiblity is that there are unecessary programs running on background.
If you have a screen saver program, this program take a lot of computer
resources.

Virus also create unwanted programs to run on background taking alot of
resources and making your computer to run slow.

Do the following:

1) Start your computer from the beginning(Not reboot)
2) Wait until the computer settle and there is no disk activity.
3) Press Alt + Ctrl + Del and select Task Manager.
4) Check how many CPU percent is active. It should be from 0 to 2 with
no activity.
5) If your computer is about 50 % and your have no program running, then
check what program is taking all that resource.
6) End that program(s) (Not Explorer) and see the performance.
