Windows XP Pro SP2 - CANNOT SYNC TIME TO INTERNET TIMESERVERS - IDEAS???

Situation:

I'm running a small home network with 5 PC's on it.

All the PCs are running Windows XP Pro. THREE of them have been
upgraded to SP2; the rest are on SP1. Otherwise they are ALL 'up to
date' when it comes to Updates.

All the PCs are behind a Linksys HW firewall.

SOME are running a version of Zonealarm (5.x); some are not.

Summary of problem/what works/what doesn't/what I've tried:

Ever since I upgraded SOME of my PCs to SP2, I have been encountering
problems SYNCing THOSE PCs clocks to Internet Time servers using
EITHER (a) the XP W32TIME service OR (b) (a) third party sync program
(Broderbund Atomic Clock 7) which I have used SUCCESSFULLY for years.

1. All the PCs still on SP1 update 'fine'.

2. The PCs running SP2 are more problematic/GENERALLY have problems:
SOME of them I've manged to get working (both W32TIME and Atomic
Clock) by 'playing around' with different time servers (setting server
to time.windows.com) BUT others (notbably my MAIN workstation have
resisted all attempts to fix.

3. Could the problem be the HW firewall? Not likely, IMO. All the SP1
PCs have no problem going through it, as do some of the SP2 machines.

4. Could the problem be ZoneAlarm??? Maybe BUT: some of the SP2
machines running ZA have no problem, and some of the SP2 machines NOT
running ZA DO. Ie. no pattern here.

5. Focusing on my 'MAIN' workstation:

a) I've tried different time servers to no avail.
b) I've tried with both W32TIME and BAC 7.0 to no avail.
c) I've shut down ZA to to avail.
d) BUT (noteably) IF I BOOT my workstation into SAFE MODE WITH
NETWORKING, everything WORKS.
e) I made a list of all the proceses thatb started automatically IN
SAFE MODE WITH NW and after booting normally, I 'stpped from
auto-starting' and/or 'killed' all the processes I could to try and
'dup' the safe mode environment TO NO AVAIL.

This is getting irritating.

The ONLY 'common denominator' seems to be SP2, as ALL the SP1 machines
have NO PROBLEM whatsover.

Anyone got any ideas???

Ever since I Imposed SP2 to my two machines, neither have been able to
sync with the XP built in clock service. However, and unlike you,
Atomic Time is working just fine on both systems.

I went through all the same trouble shooting you did to no avail. I
was told to shitcan SP2 by the IT people at work so I could get a
complete working system back but I just opted to download a non-M$
(workable) time sync program (Atomic Time) instead of going through
the M$ hurdles of trying to get back to normal.
