I have recently setup a SQL Server 2005 on a server running Windows Server
2003 R2. I then try to connect 2 users both using Windows XP Pro to the SQL
server but get an error message "Named Pipe error...". I try to enable
Windows Firewall exception for port 445, set alias for SQL Server Clinet
Network Utility but it just didn't work.. Below is my situation details, hope
you guys can help me.

- SQL Server 2005 installed on Windows 2003 R2 Server
- 2 Windows XP PRO SP2 users
- Windows Firewall port 445 has been disabled
- SQL Server Client Network Utility has add alias to the server computer/ IP
address.

many thanks.

If the Windows XP Pro machines are not joined to a domain, did you turn off
the "use simple file sharing" setting? (Open Windows Explorer > Tools >
Folder Options > View tab > scroll to bottom of list.)

Both Windows XP Pro where join domain to the Windows 2003 R2 server ( where
SQL 2005 was installed ) and "Use Simple File Sharing" option was enabled.
Do I need to disable it, or was there other settings that I need to
configured? ( cause I get error msg 'SQL Server did not configured to allow
remote connection...' when connecting from XP machine. )

I have no problem connecting with local machine ( the server itself ) to SQL
2005..

many thks,
