While trying to improve game performance I ran several programs to try and
identify if I had any conflicts or other problems. Results only indicated
some outdated drivers, one of which was from my Motherboard mfg. VIA
technologies. The driver in question was: VIA BusMaster.
On the VIA Technologies website I found and downloaded and ran a program
called DriverMagic. This program identified outdated drivers (including the
one I mentioned previously). I then directed the DriverMagic to locate and
download and install the new VIA Bus Master driver for my system. After
checking to make sure the same numbers on my system and the one it was
downloading matched, I gave it the go ahead. After the new driver was
downloaded and installed, the message came up that I needed to reboot for the
new driver to take effect.
Which is what I did. Problem: During boot computer hangs at Windows XP logo
screen.. you can see the "at work" indicator moving but after 10 minutes it
is still doing the same thing.
How can I restart my computer and perhaps revert back to the old driver to
see if the new driver is the problem? Or what do you think may be the problem
and how do I fix the problem?

I would, boot to xp cd,recovery, select 1 For C: Press enter key for password,
then type:CHKDSK C: /R When its thru, type:EXIT See if xp starts
normal..Other-
wise,at start up,tap the F8 key,select safe mode,enter xp as
administrator,open
device mgr, change the driver. The BUS driver seems it would be included in the
chipset installation utility, with that in mind, run the utility from the mfg
cd that
came with the pc.....

Thanks Andrew
My problem is.. I evacuated from Katrina.. with computer in tow... but all
discs were lost in storm, so do not have original disks.
I do have the Win XP disc.. but trying to boot from that did not work..
system said it was booting from disc.. but when it got to the win opening
again it hung.
Upon boot from cd.. it did not give me any options either.. just went from
booting from disc to windows.
Tried the F8 but nothing working. Found a backup WinXp disc put that in and
it started loading... but then asked for Key that I do not know. Now it just
stays in setup mode and will not revert to previous setup.
Now I am really peeved.. sigh..

Do you image the system? If so then restore a previous image. If not then
you have a few other options. Have you tried all the safe mode boot
options? If one of them works then try a driver rollback from safe mode and
a system restore.

If that won't work try a repair install:
http://www.michaelstevenstech.com/XPrepairinstall.htm

And if that doesn't do it then a clean install:
http://www.michaelstevenstech.com/cleanxpinstall.html

Make sure you have a backup of important data. If you don't here are some
options for doing so.

1. Take the drive out of the computer and install it as a slave drive in
another Windows XP or 2000 computer. It should read the drive ok, so you can
copy the data.

2. Create a bootable Bart's PE disk, boot from that, then copy the data to
external USB drive or flash drive.

3. Download a bootable Linux distro called Knoppix. Create a bootable CD
from that, boot from it, and copy the data to USB drive or flash drive, or
if the computer has two CD drives, one of which is a burner, then use the
k3b burning program on the Knoppix CD to burn the data to CD.

4. Take it to a competent computer tech to backup the data.

Here is the latest problem that has surfaced.
I tried to do a repair windows with the windows disc I have and I must have
really missed something or messed up because it was installing windows all
over again... I didn't realize it was trying to actually reinstall until it
asked for the key.
How do I undo the install attempt? Everything I have tried it always goes
back to trying to reinstall...

Thanks for your response.
Thanks Andrew
