Windows XP Pro & MSN Messenger 6

Steve Chatham

I have MSN messenger 6 on both mine & my wife's computer at home.

I have a wireless base station (Microsoft) hard wired to my PC, and a
wireless Cisco card in my wife's PC. We connect to the internet using ICS.

I downloaded Messenger 6 last night, and installed it on my wife's computer.
It seemed to install correctly - no error message or anything.

However, when I reboot her machine, I'll see Messenger signing in, and then
it'll minimize itself on her systray. When I put the mouse over the icon in
the systray to bring up messenger, though, it leaves the systray. I've
checked tasks, and cannot find it running elsewhere.

I know the permissions are right on her machine, and I have the same version
of the software running on my machine without incident.

Any ideas as to what this app is doing or how to fix it?

Hi Steve,

Can you confirm if you have Norton Anti-virus on your
wife's PC. There's a feature in Norton that scans
Windows/MSN Messenger messages. For some unknown reason
this can cause two problesm.

1. Force Windows/MSN Messnger to start in the brackground
when Norton starts.

2. Stop you from quiting and uninstalling Windows/MSN
Messenger.

I think you are seeing issue 1. Try disabling the option
to scan MSN Messenger messages in the Norton Option
screen under Instant Messenger.
