Windows XP Pro Login problem

My XP never prompted me for pasword before but it does today and when I
entered my admin password, it tried to load personal preferences and
automatically log-off, even in safe mode. There are several people using that
computer so I don't know whether we just removed any adware or viruses,
changed some user setting, etc.

I tried the solution from
http://www.lavasofthelp.com/articles/v6/04/06/0901.html
(copying "userinit.exe" to "wsaupdater.exe" in recovery mode)
but it didn't solve the problem.

I then copied userinit.ex_ from Windows CD to userinit.exe, then to
wsaupdater.exe....., but doesn't help. Setting it to last known good config
didn't help, either.

I don't want to re-install Windows since I have too many softwares installed
already. I'm running Windows XP Pro SP2 with Norton Internet security
running. Can anybody help, know the source of the problem or has any
suggestion?

When I tried to go to Safe Mode with a command prompt, it still asked me to
enter password, then the sign-up page recycled
