Is there a way to decrypt a file/folder that was encrypted with windows xp

change the pw for the user account through the administrator sign on. Since
that time i have been unable to do anythig with the folder and files
previously encrypted. Can You help, plaeas. Thank you in advance.

I've not played around with the EFS in windows for a long time, but if you
have the encryption certificate from the XP machine you may be able to
import it into Vista.
If you don't have the EFS key forget it.

Thanks for your reply. unfortunately I don't have the certificate or have been unable to locate it. If you can possibly lead me to it, I would appreciate it very much. I have even tried to make the system involved think that it was only one day after the encryption and before i had the 'lost pw problem', and tried various password change and rebooting, but to no avail. Again, thanks for your reply. Marty>

I'm using Vista not XP & cannot remember the method of backing up the EFS
certificate, but I think windows help tells you how to do it as it very
important to do if you use EFS.
