Need help. When I try to start Microsoft Windows XP Pro, the computer
appears to stop responding (hang) with an empty, black screen
immediately after the power-on self test (POST) is complete and before
the Windows XP logo appears on the screen.
My computer is Dell P4, 3 Ghz, with Win XP Pro. There was no
software or hardware change prior to this event. The problem is as
defined in this Windows knowledge base article below 314503. I have
gone through the recommended fixes and as far as I know to go, in
attempting to fix the problem.

The sequence of what I have done in an attempt to fix the problem is
listed below. It appears that my operating system is corrupted.
I. From recovery console:
1. Did a Windows repair option using the original Win XP Pro CD -ROM.
(still would not boot)
2. Did chkdsk /p and chkdsk /r. ( still no boot).
3. Downloaded a bootable Windows XP boot disk per the above Microsoft
KNB article. (Would not boot and returned error message that
II. Installed new secondary HD as master and loaded Windows XP pro.
Also loaded Norton Anti Virus. Original drive was assigned as slave.
1. From the new drive I can "see" the folders and files in the old
drive via Windows explorer.
2. Ran Norton Anti Virus with updated definitions on the old drive.(no
viruses found including MBR and boot sector)
3. Copied data from old drive to new drive.
4. Ran chkdsk /f from new drive on old drive. No problems indicated.
5. Replaced NTLDR file on old drive windows with new install.
III. Restored old drive as primary. Attempted to reboot which failed
with original symptoms.
1. From recovery console ran FIXBOOT and then FIXMBR on original
drive.
Question: Does anyone have any suggestions on restoring the
operating system? Any programs available that will rebuild boot
files? I was hoping to avoid a complete reformatting and reinstall
of all programs and settings.
THANKS!
