Windows XP Pro as file server

I came up with the bright idea of taking our files off of our main server to
free up processing for Exchange. I set up an XP machine and pointed the
group to it. We only have 20 connected users where it would be rare to have
more than 8 connected to the file server at a time. The problem is the users
don't seem to get released very quickly and new users are denied access due
to the maximum being reached. It is out of the question to spend thousands
to set up another server license. Any ideas would be appreciated.

Suggestion:
1) Put Win9x back on as the file server software, provided all your
apps support it, or
2) Put Win2k Server or Win2k3 Server on and buy the appropriate CALS -
there's no way around Win2k/XP Pro 10 connection limit - it's hard coded
into the code, no reg tweak, no work around - 2k/XP Pro was not designed to
be server OS's.

YES, but how can he keep the existing setup , but disconnect the users in a
reasonable amount of time?

Also, what if you set up an FTP server and let everyone connect thru that?

Configure the AutoDisconnect time on the server, as shown here:
