windows XP/ printer setup

I've recently installed the XP sp1 from disk, since then
my printer stopped working, I uninstalled it and on re-
instaling, it has shown as a removable icon in the tray
by the clock and has the safely remove hardware symbol
attached and when clicked goes through the safely remove
cycle, and removes all the software from the computer,
This also happens when you close down windows for any
reason. Any ideas out there that could sort this problem?
