Windows XP Password

My son is studying Japanese in Yokohama, Japan, and has
been using a new HP Laptop with Windows XP that he
received as a college graduation present. For no reason,
his username/password dialogue box no longer appears when
he turns on his computer. He simply gets the blank
screen. He has had friends and associates examine it but
with no solution. Can someone tell me how he may restore
his password function?
