Windows XP on a new computer.

Hi,

I have WinXP which has not been activated yet, though
it's coming up in a few more days. I want to buy a more
powerful computer to replace what I have now. I want to
place the harddrive that I have from my old computer into
the new one( I'm not getting a harddrive on the new
computer or any type of software or operating system with
it), if XP has already been activated before I get the
new computer will it run on the new computer without the
need to be reactivated, or will it think I'm trying to
install it on a second computer.

Thanks

If you move your installed XP to a new computer then you will have to
do a Repair Install of your Windows XP.

See http://michaelstevenstech.com/moving_xp.html for detailed
information and instructions.

If your Windows XP has already been activated on the first computer
then you will not be able to automatically activate on the second.
You will have to do a manual activation by telephone using the
information on the activation screen.

And if your Windows XP is an OEM version then it cannot be
legitimately moved to a different computer. OEM licenses for Windows
XP are permanently tied to the first computer that they are installed
on, even if that computer is scrapped, destroyed, or stolen. That is
clearly explained in the End User License agreement for these
versions. See the EULA.TXT file on your computer.

Good luck

If you dont activate it ,it will shut itself down.
You should have no problem installing the old HD into a new system(you WILL have
to do a repair installation though) Wether it is or is not activated does not
really affect the new system. The repair installation will create a new HAL.DLL
file which will match the new system. You might have to re-activate at that
point...I did not have some others had to.
