Windows XP often hangs while running 3d applications

Hello,
I've got a Radeon 9600 card.
Windows XP often hangs while 3d application is running.
It's winter time here, the ambient temperature is around 20C
I used to blame on the weather and the ventilation of the case
Because I used to install 4 hard drives simultanously. Now I have removed
one of them, the case temp doesn't seem to be that high but sometimes it
still hanged.
Are there any remedies to my problem?

Check the Event logs for any clue (Adminastrative Tools)

Run DXDIAG and see if it complains. Look for different drivers for the
Radeon 9600.
