WINDOWS XP: NTFS files sytems changes to RAW filesystem with 0 bytes

Hello,

Unable to access a disk in WINDOWS XP
--------------------------------------------

If I click my hard disk, I get the message that "The disk in drive X is not
formatted. Do you want to format now?".
If I right click the disk and check properties it says file system: RAW with
0 bytes used and 0 bytes free space.

This disk was working fine for few months and the original format was NTFS.

Does anyone know how can I recover the data or how can I fix this problem?

Your help would be greatly appreciated.

Regards

This happened to me with 2 drives on my 2nd IDE controller. There was no
fixing it, but I was able to recover 99% of my data. Then I installed new
partitions on the drives and have not had any problems with them since.

Same here - it was a secondary drive.

How did you recover your data? Please advise.

It seems to me some bug with Windows XP.

Run chkdsk /f on the partition. Then run the manufacturer's diagnostic
utility on the drive.

chkdsk /f will recover clusters but you probably lose the
data because you'll have 10,000 files in numerical order and
no way to detect which is which.

The main problem with files that chkdsk saves its that it's saved
as text. Unless the file that was lost was text (or even *mostly*
text might work), the result is gibberish and can't really be
used for anything. I've heard of people who say they have
successfully recovered lost data from these files, but I've never
run into it myself. With rare exceptions, these files are
useless.
