I have tried to connect 2 networks at home and had dismal results. I have XP
with S1.

Shares the Cable Internet but problems with File Sharing. I can ping my
computer (192.168.0.1) from the other (192.168.0.2) but cannot ping the other
from mine, but the internet is working on the other computer.

I cannot see the other computer and the other cannot see mine. When I try to
look at the workgroup around me it say "workgroup is not accesible. You may
not have permission to access this network resource".

I'm also trying to help a friend with his network which has one wireless
client. again only two computers on it and the same problem.

Is there anything that can be done to correct this fault. The network has
worked before and due to a crash and reinstallation has not worked since.

Thanks

The primary cause of problems such as this is firewall software. If you
have the Windows XP SP1 firewall software, disable it. If you have the
Windows XP SP2 firewall software, be sure it's configured to allow File and
Printer Sharing traffic or disable it. If you have a non-Microsoft
firewall, UNINSTALL IT (don't just disable it because some non-MS firewalls
don't disable correctly) and see if you can connect then.

I use Sysgate personal and nothing on the 2nd PC. Maybe thats why it can ping
with my pc and not the otherway around. Will shutting down the service via a
ctrlaltdel be adequate.

Thanks for the quick reply.

Before you do anything drastic with the Sygate firewall, open it and
look under its options. There is a place to allow Network Neighborhood
to function. Make sure you've checked this and then see if your lan
works. If you have SP2, make sure you have the latest version of the
Sygate firewall.

I had done this and still there was no progress. On Richard's advice I have
uninstalled and still no progress.

There was no "DhcpNodeType" and this was there is the other pc2 so I entered
it into the registry. now IPconfig says type is mixed but still no good.

is there any perticular service that has to be run. I see quite a lot of
them are off including Telnet and Routing & Remote services

Run through MVP Hans-Georg Michna's network troubleshooter here:

If that doesn't help, come back and post the results you got.

Problem Fixed. PC2's virus guard PCCiline had its firewall on. this was
disabled and netbuie was installed. Last night it worked but this morning the
error message comes up again. I cannot browse the network computers.

even with this error the shared directory are accessible.
