windows xp media center edition on external

ya i got a gateway laptop that was packaged with xp media center
edition, well the main 120 gig HDD in it keeps comin up with a hard
drive failure emminent (spelling?) it still works just sluggish, well i
got a 250 gig external to use while i send in the HDD to gateway to get
replaced, how do i go about gettin windows on the external to use while
i send the other one in

I doubt that you will be able to get that to work. A lot has been said
about the ability to boot from USB devices but few have ever posted to
these groups with claims of having succeeded in accomplishing that with
any Windows versions. Perhaps the newer Vista might be able to do it
but that remains to be seen. You might be able to boot a cd or floppy
from a USB device but booting an installed operating system on a USB
hard disc is another matter altogether. You would probably have better
luck booting a Windows 98 setup/DOS diskette with motto hairu (AKA
Panasonic) drivers and then boot Windows 9x on the USB hard disc.
