Windows XP loses network authentication

I have a windows 2000 server domain with windows 2000 workstations and
windows XP workstations. I have no problems with the 2000 workstations but
this keeps happening with the XP pro machines. I have rebuilt the HDD with
the straight install of XP pro, nothing else no configurations except
joining to the domain. No users except the domain admin account. After the
build, the machine works just fine, however if I leave the machine and come
back a few hours later and try to access a network drive I am prompted with
the "Connect to [server]" dialog box requiring network authentication. If I
try to use the same user name and password that I am already logged into
then errors telling me I can't use the same name and password and that a
domain has not been found to validate the user. I have been trying to figure
this out for several months to no avail. I have tried creating new user
accounts. Nothing. I have tried rejoining the machine to the domain.
Nothing. Sometimes I can disable the network connection then re-enable it
and I will avoid a reboot, but most times it will require a reboot. Please I
hope someone has the answer

Thanks in advance Tim

When you *join* the domain:

Are you using the domain's fully qualified DNS name or the single-part
NetBIOS name?
Are your client's DNS settings pointing to the DNS zone hosting the SRV
records?
Are you logging on locally or with a domain account?

-ds

Yes. Machine Name = machinename.domain.com Domain Name = domain.com
Are your client's DNS settings pointing to the DNS zone hosting the SRV
records?
It is set to Receive DNS Automatically. I have also tried to set the DNS
manually.
Are you logging on locally or with a domain account?
I am logged into the domain with a domain administrator account
