Windows XP login problem

I have been having login problem for quite a while and don't know what to do
about it. Please help me out, I really appreciate. Here is the problem.
Everytime when I start my computer I can get to login screen with user icons
without problem. Right after I entered my password, I see "Please wait while
...." and it takes quite long time then I will see a blank creen with no icons
on it. I have to press the Ctrl +Alt+Del to get the Program Manager and log
off there, thne login again. The second time login will always success.
Please help me out. Thanks.

Use msconfig.exe to disable all startup programs, reboot, and see if the
first login works okay. If it does, enable the startup programs one at
a time to retest to see when the problem recurs.
