Windows XP locks up on the Welcome Screen

I can get into safe mode and I also tried the option of the last known
configuration that worked and that did get me into the desktop but it didn't
finish loading the startup or task bar at the bottom of the screen. I don't
know of any new installs on this computer it is a work computer and the owner
was on it and it locked up and later (days later) after no use will lock up
at the welcome screen. ( the normal user was on a 2 wk vacation so it wasn't
being used except for the one time by the owner of the company. Any idea's....

Thank you!!

Sounds like something is preventing the OS from loading. If you can
get into safe mode, but not normal windows it could be a driver
problem. Try removing the video card (if it has one) and rebooting.
You could also try running chkdisk on the HD - it could be going
south. As a last resort you could do a windows repair.

If you can get into safe mode , have you tried running ( if it has )
antivirus ?

Should I remove the video card or just uninstall the driver in device
manager? Or disable it? This is on a network and the computer that is our
method of getting an internet connection has a virus program does each
computer need one as well? Because we don't have that.

Thanks for your help!

If you're on a network you should have a network admin. Has he/she
tried troubling shooting?

As for the video card - I forgot to mention to first check to see if
the motherboard has on-board video. If it doesn't, there's no way to
check the video card unless you have another one, or can check the
existing card in another computer.

If it does have on-board video, uninstall the driver in device
manager, shut down the computer, remove the video card, plug the
monitor into the on-board video and restart. You may have to enable
the on-board video in the BIOS (usually in integrated peripherals). If
the computer starts fine, that's the problem.

If the server has a decent anti-virus/firewall, the computers on the
network should not need one. Though it wouldn't hurt to have AV/FW on
your system.
