Windows XP installation

I am trying to install windows xp professional on my
laptop (Dell Inspiron 3700). After the installtion was
essentially complete and the reboot was attempted, an
error message comes up saying
"Windows could not start because the following file was
missing or corrupt,
<windows boot>\system32\hal.dll
please re-install a copy of the above file"

If I cannot boot, how can I install the file?

Will,
Thanks for the reference. I must be dumber than most, so
don't know if you can help me. The article you reference
said to boot from the CD. However, when I try to boot
(using the CD) all I get is error message. My original
OS (Windows 98) has been removed in the installation
process, so now I am without any OS.

Thanks,
Cedac

Hi Cedac

What kind of XP CD have you got - OEM, upgrade etc? Have you still got the
Win 98 installation CD - you may have to re-install that first if you have
no OS at the moment.

Will,

The XP CD is OEM, and the computer I am trying to install
on is a Dell Inspiron 3700.

Thanks,
Cedac

Will,

I think I was able to resolve the problem. I went into
the laptop configuration system set up and changed the
primary boot device to CD and was able to boot from the
CD. The XP installation now seems to be proceeding
smoothly.

Thanks for your help!
Cedac
