I am sure the solution to this is a snap for the members
of this august group!!

I purchased windows/xp media center upgrade.

I clobbered the windows98 system I was replacing.

windows/xp thinks this is not an upgrade and wants the
cd for a prior OS.

the CD for windows98 is not good (system says not
readable or not a system disk)

I have not received my $100 rebate for purchasing XP as
an upgrade.

Any ideas short of purchasing another copy of XP complete?

thanks, John

You have purchased the incorrect version of Windows XP.
Return it and purchase a "full version" of either Windows
XP Home Edition or XP Professional. The "upgrade version"
requires you to have the actual Windows 98 CD in order to
perform a "clean install".

The Windows Media Center Upgrade will only install on a
computer that has an existing version of Windows Media
Center currently installed, and that computer must meet
the hardware requirements for installing Windows Media
Center Edition.

How to Upgrade to Windows XP Media Center Edition 2004:

A select group of Microsoft Windows XP Media Center Edition
personal computer manufacturers offer an upgrade from
Windows XP Media Center Edition to Microsoft
Windows XP Media Center Edition 2004. "You must be a user of
a PC licensed for Windows XP Media Center Edition from the
same PC manufacturer to upgrade".

Restore the 98 system. Then Run the CD from that system. Enter
Install, change Upgrade to New Install, then when it asks you to confirm
where, you can hit ESC and get the chance to select the current
partition, delete it, and create a new RAW one, going on to format it
as part of the setup

This will by that time have checked the eligibility.

But the media center edition is supposed to be solely for supply with
specific media center PCs, and may not work as an upgrade on an earlier
system - which will not be approved media center hardware. I have not
heard of it as an upgrade at all
