I have installed xp home - wanting to update 2000 professional but it
installed alongside 2000 professional - on startup i now have to choose one
or the other - i am not very technical with regard to deleting unwanted 2000
files - and im sure unnecessary space is now being taken up by the old system
- i want to clean up my computer and rid the old 2000 files - but i am
worried that i might delete some required files for xp home - please help

Hi John,

You don't really need to be technical for this. What you need to do is
delete the system folder for Win2000, then correct boot.ini (this will
remove the reference to it at startup).

First, if you did a parallel (side by side) installation, then you will
likely have 2 Windows folders (one may be named winnt or winold, but they
will not both have the same name). To determine which belongs to XP, click
start/run and type %systemroot% and click ok - this will open the XP system
folder. Once you know which one is which, just delete the other right from
Windows Explorer, there is nothing special you need to do.

Afterwards, click start/run and type msconfig, then click ok. Go to the
boot.ini tab, click on the button to 'check all boot paths'. It should offer
to remove the now invalid path to the Win2000 installation.

Hi John,

Click start/run, type cmd and click ok. From the prompt run this:

dir c: /d >C:\list.txt

Once finished, close the command prompt. Then click start/run and type
C:\list.txt and click ok. This will open the file in notepad. Click
edit/select all/edit/copy. Open a reply to this post, click in the message
text area. Hit ctrl+v to paste the contents and send it.
