Windows xp hotfix file

When I look at the files on my add/remove program list,
I see a series of windows xp hotfix files. I have no clue
what these are or what they do. I was considering
removing them so I can clear up memory on my computer.

Could someone please tell me what they are and if
removing them would be a bad thing?

They are the patches and critical updates that have been downloaded to your
machine if you remove them you remove the update, if you don't want to
uninstall the update they can be removed and I know someone will come along
and tell you how to do it, sorry but I don't have the link or info handy.

If you use Add and Remove Programs to "remove" these you will simply revert
back to the unpatched version. Leave them alone. If you really, really need
to free up disk space you can do the following:

1) Open Explorer and go to Tools->Folder Options->View Tab and select "Show
hidden files and folders"
2) Open C:\Windows and you should see a list of directories called
$NtUninstallQxxxxx$ and "$NtUninstallKBxxxxx$ (where the x's represent the
hotfix reference number) You can manually delete these folder - PROVIDING -
you do not wish to roll back to the pre-hotfix state.
3) Once these directories are deleted you can open Add and Remove Programs
and click on the Remove button to remove the corresponding Qxxxxx or KBxxxxx
item(s) from the Add and Remove Programs list.

Make certain you do step 2 before step 3.
