Windows XP Home-System Restore problems, etc.

I'm having problems at start up. An error comes up after Windows Installer
interrupts..."configuring document viewer for a tray application". This
happens while I'm "still" waiting for everything to load up. Then the Doc
Viewer box comes up saying the feature I am trying to use is on a CD-ROM or
other removable disk that is not available. I try to click cancel and it
keeps coming back up. I tried to cancel the initial download and it keeps
trying to download. Then the Doc Viewer box comes up to block that. It also
says: Error 1706- No valid source could be found for product "Doc Viewer".
The Windows Installer can not continue. I have tried all that I, with my
limited computer knowledge, can do. Finally.....
I decided to restore my computer to a few days ago before all this started.
I went to System Restore Wizard and chose to restore to earlier date. When I
tried to click a bold numbered date, I was unable to select. The only date
that was making itself available was the current one. I couldn't even select
a different month. Can anyone make any sense of this to help me? If so,
thank you in advance. :)

You could try restoring in safe mode, to get to safe mode re-boot an
keep tapping F8 every couple of seconds until screen comes up. Her
you have options, either start up in safe mode or select 'last know
good configuration that worked'

But first have a peep here-: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/29783
