I updated my Windows XP Home Edition to SP2. Now, when I
open "My Computer", it takes almost 2 minutes to open,
with the "flashlight" showing in the meantime. Prior to
SP2, this would take about 1-2 seconds.

Any ideas? I have a home network.

Thanks,

John

You MUST have missed one of the hundreds of prequalification related to the install. Did you put on a green shirt, hold your left hand in the air and stand in a corner while the install was in progress? Ridiculous - huh? So are a WHOLE lot of the pre install qualifications!

I'm NOT picking fun at you John - I empathize with you. It's the whole sp2 fiasco that's a hoot!

Ignore User1 as you probably already have decided for yourself. He's an
idiot who apparently takes delight in giving others grief without trying
to help.

As to your issue, How long has it been? It can take several days and 3
or 4 reboots for it to speed up. First defrag. The boot prefetch will
kick in after the 3 rd reboot. It takes several days for the prefetch
folder to be rebuilt. And the in built optimization kicks in every 3
days which will help quite a bit. After that defrag again. If the
system is still slow after some days try some clean boot troubleshooting
to see what may be hanging up on startup. A program may need to be
uninstalled / reinstalled:

After the install, Disk Cleanup and Defragmenter, in that order. In
Folder Options, deselect the option to check network drives.

I too had a slow to boot condition after installing SP2 and your suggestions
to clean & defrag helped. Thanks.
