Hello,
A friend has lost there product key for XP Home. He believes he enetered his
details and registered them with Microsoft when activating the product. So is
there anyway he can contact Microsoft and they can quote his product key to
him?

Regards
Scott

If the computer is still operational:

Retrieve your Windows XP CD key
http://www.belarc.com/free_download.html

However, if the computer will not boot, then you cannot
obviously use the above program to find the Product Key.
In that case, proceed with the following:

How to replace lost, broken, or missing Microsoft software or hardware

Does your friends machine boot up and into windows? If so then he can
download a windows key finder like these...:

http://www.magicaljellybean.com/keyfinder.shtml
or
http://www.softpedia.com/get/Security/Decrypting-Decoding/WinKeyFinder.shtml

and run the install and run the programs and they will tell him the xp key.

If his windows is acting up maybe he can get in via safe mode (tapping f8
continuously during startup and selecting safemode from list) and you can
download one of these programs and take it to him and install it during safe
mode.

Also I'm sure there is a way to contact Microsoft about this but I hate
dealing with them it takes hours in most cases. So try these out and if they
work then GREAT!

The Product Key is not sent to Microsoft during registration or activation
so they can't help. If the system is still booting to windows he can use a
keyfinder to display the key and then record it
http://www.magicaljellybean.com/keyfinder.shtml

If the system is not booting but he hasn't wiped the drive he might be able
to retrieve the key by using the UBCD4Win http://www.ubcd4win.com/index.htm
as it contains a tool called Keyfinder PE. The Cd is a self booting disc
that runs a version of Windows XP off the CD. Once it is running you can go
to the Keyfinder program and set it to search C:\Windows. It can locate and
retrieve the product key used to install XP on the system.
