My windows XP Home used to load directly into windows
from
bootup without having to go to the cool windows screen
showing users accounts to click on. I reinstalled my
windows xp home and now it goes to the signon screen each
time. How can I get this back to booting directly into
windows?

Thanks.

Hi

Try this:

From Start>Run type in

control userpasswords2

then uncheck 'Users must enter a user name and password to use this computer' and click 'Apply'. On the next screen - 'Automatically Log On' - delete the name 'Administrator' from the User name box and enter your account name and then the password in the next two boxes. OK your way out and then reboot your system.

Or you can use Tweak UI:

You can download TweakUI from http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/pro/downloads/powertoys.asp and when installed go to Programs>Powertoys for Windows XP>Tweak UI - then go to Logon>Autologon.

Hello,
I thought I had Windows XP Home, but I actually have XP
Pro. I did what you suggested below because I am tired
of having the login window come up when I turn on my PC.
Now, the login window comes up with Administrator as the
username and I can't do anything! My PC does not have an
Admin password, but when I leave it blank it says I have
to enter one. I tried what was suggested on another
posting (doing ctrl-alt-delete twice to reset the
password) but ctrl-alt-delete X 2 didn't do anything.
Any suggestions to assist a major dork? :)
Thanks!

Works the same for Home or Pro. You failed to select your user name, thus
setting the system admin to auto logon. Correct it using the same steps
provided.

I have tried your suggestions - both modifying the 'control userpasswords2' and downloading and installing Tweak UI. In both cases, changes were made to the logon box, but the logon box continued to be present and requested a password. I want to eliminate the logon and go directly to the start menu, the way my computer used to be before I tried to network 4 home computers. Thanks in advance for any further suggestions.

This just doesn't sound right at all. Go to Start/Run/Regedit and navigate
to this key:
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon]

Add or modify these string values:

DefaultUserName (user name goes here)
DefaultPassword (user password goes here)
AutoAdminLogon (set to 1)

Exit the registry, reboot.

Side note for TweakUI and/or manual: If you are using Auto-Logon, Clear or
DontDisplayLastUserName must not be selected and/or set. It nulls
auto-logon. Good luck!
