Windows XP Home Edition Repair Installation

I hope someone can help me. After receiving an e-mail
from my computer's manufacturer suggesting that I do a
repair installation of Windows XP from my recovery CD, I
encountered problems in the set up stage. Set up runs for
a few minutes then the screen goes black twice and then a
blue screen briefly appears (it goes too quickly to see
what it says, something about there being a problem!) and
then the computer reboots. On rebooting, the computer
comes up with a blue screen and says "set up restarting".
When set up starts again the same problem occurs. I have
no idea how to get out of the set up and back to my
original version of XP. Does anyone have any suggestions.
Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

Shutdown computer,on starting tap the F8 key, then select, start windows normal
mode,or start last good configuration. You could/can also enter the BIOS,exit
page, select, load set-up defaults, then save changes and exit BIOS.

Thanks for your advice. I tried to start both last good
configuration and normal mode and it states "Windows could
not start because the following file is missing or
corrupt: WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\CONFIG\SYSTEM. You can attempt
to repair this file by starting Windows Setup using the
original setup CD ROM. Do you have any ideas what this
means and how to fix it? In the meantime I will try the
repair disk again. Thanks
