Windows XP home edition activation key

I like to stay legal, purchased a copy of home edition
(R800,00 did not even come with SP2/3), loaded on PC all
is fine, sold PC after formatting hard drive, bought new
PC, now cannot activate XP. Must I now buy new XP
edition???? this i think is beyond even the worst scam I
have encountered. Any advice will do, Please?????????????
