Can some please tell me if I need two I386 files in
Windows XP. There is a i386 in the driver cache, 92.8 MB
in size. There is also a I386 file in Windows, 426 MB in
size.I am under the opinion that the I386 in windows
should not be there, and may have put it there during a
repair.
Thanks for any advice.

The one in the Driver Cache directory contains Service Pack 1 files that
XP's built in system file maintenance looks to fix corrupt files. You are
correct about the one in the Windows directory in that it is not necessary
to be there and may have come from a repair attempt. However if you have the
space you may as well leave it alone. It could come in handy if you run
System File Checker for example.

426 MB if directly under Windows is probably the set of files from
which the system was installed by the makers and is available for a
reinstall. If the files in it have _ as final characters of extensions
-- eg .dl_ or .ex_ this is the case.

You would only need them in a reinstall or possibly if refreshing files
with SFC - and only if you do not have a CD that has the folder on it.
You could copy the whole folder to a CD-R disk if you have a burner; but
you need the files available in *some* way against emergencies
