windows xp files?

I have been told that I can use my operating system cd that came with my
computer to reinstall windows without losing any files and repairing any
damaged ones on my system, is this true? I also have a restore cd, do I need
to use this, or will this wipe out all my programs and files that I have put
on here. How can you repair files for windows without losing or damageing
them if this is not right. Thank you for your time & help.

To reinstall Windows, you need a Windows XP installation CD. Done,
correctly, a reinstallation of Windows does not touch your own files.

"How to perform an in-place upgrade (reinstallation) of Windows XP"

A Windows XP installation CD is NOT the same thing as a so-called restore
CD. A restore CD will erase everything on your hard disk and replace it with
whatever was originally installed by the manufacturer.

Repair install

What problem are you having? Their may be an easier way to fix it.
In theroy a repair install does not remove your settings or applications but
as with everything else something may go wrong.
It will however remove all microsoft hotfixes so visit windows update when
you are done.
