Windows XP extremely slow after clicking on my log on icon

I have a 2600 amd, 1 gig ram, plenty (40 gigs) space left on disk. I run zone
alarm, AVG security, use spy guard, spy bot S&D, trojan remover. Have never
had a trojan,virus etc.
System boot fine, when I click on my log on icon, it takes about 45 seconds
to 1 min to bring up the desk top. Lately what comes up first is the desktop
image I use, then 20 seconds later my icons appear. This started happening
awhile ago. I used a registry cleaner, it removed something and things went
south. I did a system restore and things were fine for awhile. I have cleaned
up my files, defragged, not sure where to go next. My start up menu is bare
bones for what I need, has been for some time so thats not it. Any suggestion
as to where to start the diagnosis?

Thanks is advance.
