Windows XP Disc Clean Utility

I have a Dell Inspiron 8100 with XP home edition. When I try to use the disc
clean untility it just hangs. I have deleted most of my files and it now has
only programs loaded. I have scanned for virus.
Any suggestions as to how I can resolve this.
